Dance is in our HeARTs - Connecting with our Neighbors

October was a big month for our New Outreach Program: Connecting with our Neighbors. During the first week of October we offered three lecture/demonstrations at our identified outreach sites: Tenderloin Boys and Girls Club, Mercy Housing's Columbia Park Facility and De Marillac Academy, a low income 4th-8th grade school. All of these sites are located within blocks or our studios at 7th and Market. We have continued to grow our partnership with Presidio Middle School's Dance Program and conducted a site visit there to kick off our fall 2012 collaboration.

On October 6th at Mint Plaza we ...

Dance Center Co-Director, Robin Anderson, Speaks from the HeART

Ever believe that art could transform a neighborhood? This past weekend I witnessed it's potential in the opening of the 24 Days of Central Market Arts Festival. On Friday, September 28th, I was on the corner of 6th and Market when my colleague said "It feels like we're in New York."  The streets were bustling with musicians, art mural projects, crowds were streaming out of businesses and arts organizations, and the entire evening was anchored by dance at two outdoor plazas. How rare that I can say I spent five hours experiencing our Central Market neighborhood. Over three ...

30 Questions with dancer Meredith Webster

For anyone who has attended a LINES Ballet performance in the last seven years, you know Ms. Webster as the talented beauty with the forever legs and the punky, short hair. On stage she is unmistakable, and in person she is nothing short of amazing.

To help celebrate our 30th ANNIVERSARY, Meredith has graciously agreed to answer one question for each year of our existence. Enjoy this small insight into Ms. Meredith Webster!

    1) When did you start dancing for LINES Ballet? 2005

    2) What was the last great book you read? An Everlasting Meal, by Tamar Adler

    3) What ...

    Thirty Years Ago Today

Thirty years ago today, LINES, A Dance Company (as it was known back then), took the stage at San Francisco State University’s McKenna Theater to perform Alonzo King’s inaugural ballet, Maya. The performance was the culmination of months of hard work by a group of young friends who had found each other in San Francisco’s dance scene. Wanting to take their artistry to the public, the friends rented rehearsal space at Dance Mission Theater where King taught and the founding Company members took class. While King and the dancers worked hard in the studio, co-founders Robert Rosenwasser ...

    Hello LINES Ballet fans!

We just landed in New York City on Sunday. Before I dive into the details of NYC, I want to recap on the performance we just had in Livermore, California. It is a cute and lovely little town. We drove down early that Saturday morning. The ride was quite peaceful and the weather was perfect. The theater was comfortable and well equipped. The staff was cheerful, especially the costume lady named Teri. She was really nice and helpful about giving directions to near by places.

As far as the dancing portion of this tour went, we ...

Babatunji William Johnson, Training Program Student

My name is Babatunji William Johnson, but everyone calls me Tunji. I was born in Portland, Oregon on January 30, 1991 but grew up on The Big Island of Hawaii.

In 2007, at the age of 16, I started dancing after watching and being inspired by the documentary Rize (which is about a new style of Hip-Hop called Krumping). Since there were no teachers, I taught myself by watching YouTube. After starting a Hip-Hop crew with my friend Grady, I got hooked on dancing and began teaching myself how to pop as well as break dance. In a year, I ...

    Fresno
It was weird a feeling for me to dance the Scheherazade opening pax on the stage! I had only ever danced it in the studio, and it was like dream for me to dance on the stage with LINES after the long wait for my visa. The bus ride to Fresno was about three and half hours; we had a great time joking around together. The show was great, as always, but it was little hard having to take another three and half hour bus ride back to San Francisco after the show. We got back around 1am! It ...

    February 10, 2012 - Erin McCormick

I participated in LINES' recent Flash Mob at Hallidie Plaza and I had the best time! It is not often people from all walks of life gather together to bust out in spontaneous dance. The process of the Flash Mob was as fun as the performance. Breton Tyner-Bryan, a regular teacher at the Dance Center, choreographed the number. She was really efficient at practice and at the same time made sure we were all having a good time. I loved our random dance party one rehearsal where you could really see people get down! It only took a couple practices ...
