We’ve arrived in Bucharest, or “Little Paris,” as we’ve been told it’s called.
The city is bigger than I thought it would be, and definitely feels more urban than Chisinau. We are lucky to be staying in a really nice hotel, which includes an extravagant breakfast and a penthouse pool with steam room, jacuzzi, and sauna…. what it does not include is a no smoking rule, blegh!
This morning I was asked to take part in a press conference with Arturo, which I thought would be one or two people asking us some questions and jotting down the answers. It turned out to be a full-on event, with TV cameras, lights, microphones, and about 15 journalists, one of which asked me: “What does ballet mean to YOU?” I paused…..! We learned at the press conference that the President of Moldova attended our show there, and that our show in Bucharest (in a 1200-seat theater) has been sold out for months. The Japanese, French, and Chilean ambassadors plan to attend, although the French ambassador had to call the presenter to plead for tickets since there were none left to purchase!
The theater is under EXTREME renovations, so we’ll see how the day goes tomorrow amidst the drywall and drilling, but hopefully there will be a buzz in the house and Bucharest will feel us.
